Protection from tear gas and physical harm

  • Goggles that are sealed against air (e.g. swimming or scientific goggles ). If you are using a half-face respirator, the goggles may not fit. In this case, use swimming goggles, but note that swimming goggles usually do not have good visibility; if you cannot find goggles that protect you from gas exposure, use goggles that protect you from particle or rubber splinter damage. For example – airsoft goggles, industrial goggles , etc.;
  • A helmet that will protect your head from injury. It can be a bicycle, motorcycle, industrial, or other type;

  • A cut-up bottle (e.g. a 1.5-liter Coca-Cola can) or a small bucket partially filled with water and thick gloves . You can also drop a gas capsule or grenade into a container of water to neutralize it. Note that some capsules may remain hot for a while. Some gas grenades are combined and, in addition to releasing gas, also act as a stun/flashbang. Be careful, they may explode when handled.

  • Clothing that covers your skin as much as possible and is comfortable;

  • Comfortable shoes;

  • Avoid wearing contact lenses . Lenses can trap tear gas particles and make them difficult to remove. If you wear contact lenses, wear a face mask or goggles;

  • Avoid wearing makeup , such as eyeliner, for the same reason;

  • Earplugs will reduce the likelihood of damage to your hearing. LRADs with high frequencies and decibels, also known as “Sound Cannons,” are often used in riot control.

What to bring to the rally

  • Water;

  • To clean areas contaminated with CS gas, you can use water, saline solution, baking soda , or milk ;

    It is best to use a container from which you can shoot water under pressure, for example: a water pistol , a narrow-necked bottle , a saline solution reservoir (can be pierced and then turned upside down to create a jet of liquid);

    Based on various studies, it has been determined that water is the best choice. However, people who find themselves in similar situations express different versions.

  • Convenient backpack ;

  • A raincoat that will protect you from getting wet from a sudden downpour or a sudden stream of water;

  • A jacket that will keep you warm if you get wet or mitigate damage if you get caught in a rip current;

  • Identity document ;

  • Write down on a piece of paper the contact numbers you need in case of arrest. You can also write down the numbers of free legal aid ;

  • If you take daily medications, bring a few days' supply of them with you, in case you are detained and are found without them;

  • If you have any chronic health problems, write them down somewhere with a felt-tip pen to inform the medical staff if you arrive at a medical facility unconscious;

  • A change of clothes , in case you get chemicals on your clothes;
