What is cybersecurity?

Cybersecurity encompasses the set of technologies, processes, and practices that protect networks, devices, applications, and data from malicious attacks. While it is impossible to protect our personal data 100%, it is possible to make it more difficult for criminals to break in (a thief may still be able to break into our house, but that doesn't mean we don't lock the door).

Mobile device protection

  • Passwords and biometrics: There is often a misconception that setting up fingerprint and/or facial recognition is not secure. In reality, when we don't use biometric methods, we are forced to set up simple PINs or passwords on our phones that can be cracked in less than a second.
In fact, the right approach is to set a complex, unique password that we rarely have to enter, and use biometrics in every diary.
  • System updates: It is very important to regularly update your operating system and applications, as updates often contain security patches that protect against vulnerabilities. System providers create and distribute updates not only to change the appearance and functionality, but also to fix bugs and “holes” in the system’s security, because such “weaknesses” can easily be exploited by viruses and hackers. When your phone or computer notifies you of an update, do not be lazy, be sure to install it immediately.
  • Download apps: Only download apps from official sources, such as Google Play or the App Store, to avoid malware.
  • Messenger protection: Enable two-step verification on messenger apps like WhatsApp, Viber, Signal, and Telegram to increase account security.
And for two-step verification, avoid using SMS, use the Ente Auth app instead.

  • Suspicious links: Do not click on suspicious links sent to you via SMS or email. Use VirusTotal.com to scan links or files before opening them.

  • Password Manager: It is recommended to use unique and complex passwords for each account. A password manager can help you manage them. A free and very good resource is the Bitwarden app.
